The local school board presented the local union members with an all or nothing deal : pay freezes and double insurance premiums or nothing. Union officials cite the fact that before the vote took place to implement the policy – no time was allowed for the union leadership to present the plan to members and seek a vote or counter-proposal. Now Xenia teachers and school employees are faced with the option of accepting the new labor contract placed upon them or striking.
But Jones contends that employees costs will go way up. Someone’s insurance premium that is $90 per month could increase to $250 to $400 per month. Jones said that’s on top of reduced hours (and therefore reduced pay), wage freezes, no step raises. “We’ve already made agreements and concessions,” Jones said.
